I knew they were winners.
When last I wrote about my Ducks in a row they were playing for the Rose Bowl…NOW they are playing Auburn in the BCS Championship Monday night 1/2011 for the title for the top!! Isn’t it nice to go for the top!?
I do not have tickets…and my cat is sick and HOW can a former head cheerleader not go!!?????? It just isn’t right.
I moved out of Pebble Beach, drove north and now have had my adventures of getting my mom into retired/assisted] living. (that will be a story unto itself…). I became much too responsible and well, after the Oregon Ducks beating Stanford, which helped get them to this pinnacle…I ignored the chances of a BCS Bowl and devoted my time to my mom. A former cheerleader and NO TX!!!
She turned 93 this October. I thought: “What can you give a 93 year old mom? I gave her a DUCK DOOR. I got my friend Steve to get green and yellow paint (college regulation colors..) and we painted the door. I do not care about what her condo association will say because the condo across the street painted their half a nauseating, medicinal green and god help them if they say anything about the Oregon colors that represent a team that is vying for the national championship in football. My mom saw it the night we all took her for a surprise DUCK DINNER in Portland at the well known, and beloved Papa Haydn restaurant.
We had a Duck cake for her and we all wore a variety of Duckl t-shirts and sweatshirts. It was a big hit and of course, who knew we would be playing in the national championship?…then in October!
I was head cheerleader for the DUCKS a long time ago when Dan Fouts, QB (San Diego Chargers) played for Oregon…so when I went to the Stanford (Andrew Luck, QB, Heisman Trophy finalist) Oregon game, I wanted to have my photo taken outside the stadium entrance below the big “O” to remind me of some great days. Little did I know about three hours later our win would help catapult us to the BCS bowl. Luck was runnerup to the Heisman….And Luck gave the Ducks..luck.
My father was a duck in the mid 1920’s (yes, I was an afterthought, gimme a break) and my brother was a former duck. I am surrounded by a pond and ducks where I now live. I have always been surrounded by water, fowl, and flight. So I guess I am consistent.
The other day, I walked to the big man-made lake for waterfowl. Whenever I would visit my mom I would walk or run around that lake. It has the most magnificent sunsets. As I was walking back home three ducks (I swear) veered off the grass and ONE, SOLITARY white duck walked about twenty feet out of his group and direction straight over to my ankles. He stopped, looked up at me with a beautiful orange yellow bill and stared at me. I spoke to him as a friend and he looked up at me and then nibbled at my leg and looked up at me again. I thanked him and after a few moments of him staring at me with beautiful, golden eyes, he turned, ruffled his tail feathers a bit and walked back to his two friends, the mallard and hen. I think it is an omen.
